Attractions Jericoacoara
Jericoacoara -
Attractions region Jericoacoara
Among the several attractions, the most famous is the Arched Rock, a huge gate of stone sculpted by the waves, situated in the Rocky Region of Jericoacoara.
This part of the beach starts after the Malhada Beach, the first beach on the east side of the village, already outside the bay. The Malhada beach is small, with waves, good for surfing and wave windsurfing. It is also a place where naturists go topless and practice nudism. The Rocky Region stretches over 2 km of coast, ending up at the Frade Rock. Besides the famous Arched Rock, there is infinity of other rocks with curious shapes, as well as caves and natural pools.
Hiking through the rocky region is something not to be missed, but you must go at low tide, since when the tide is high there will be no passage between the sea and the Serrote, a small hill (about 100 m altitude) of rock and sand covered by low vegetation, where the Lighthouse of Jericoacoara is situated. This is the best place to observe sunrise and moonrise, since it offers the best possible view of the sea to the east.
Jericoacoara has a very special geographical position, since it is the furthest north spot of the coast of the state of Ceará, with sea to the east and to the west side, being one of the few continental beaches of Brazil where it is possible to see both sunrise and sunset in the sea, as well as moonrise and moonset. At sunset, it is already traditional to watch it from a big sand dune on the west side of the village, called Sunset Dune.
One of the most impressive attractions of Jericoacoara is the night, due to the beauty of the sky. Since there is no light on the streets, and the atmosphere is very clear, the place is perfect for sky observation. If you come in the full moon period, climb a dune, and you will see a view that seems to be from another planet: dunes "lit" by the moonlight, and a silver shining sea, framed by the silhouette of the palm trees along the coast.
If the night is not in the full moon period, even better: just look up, from any place away from artificial illumination. You will see the most starlit sky of your life. Shooting Stars cross the sky at every instant, while communication satellites can be seen with the naked eye.
Jericoacoara also has some attractions, which only happen at certain times of the year: if you have the luck to visit Jericoacoara between June 15th and July 30th, don't miss the Sunset at the Arched Rock, because this is the only time of the year that the sun fits right into the arch. Another traditional date in Jericoacoara is New Year's Eve. The place gets very busy at this time of year, since a lot of people are attracted by the good mood of beginning a new year in such a beautiful place. Windsurfers also meet in Jericoacoara at the end of the year for a traditional Windsurfing Festival.
